Description

The England national football team is one of the oldest teams in the world. They played their first international match in 1872 against Scotland. The national team's governing body is the Football Association of England, founded in 1863, became a member of FIFA in 1905 and UEFA in 1954. In 1883, the national team competed in the British Championship for the first time. In 1966, England, under the leadership of Alf Ramsey, managed to win the World Cup. It's the only such victory in its history. In the final at Wembley Stadium, the England national team fought against the German one and won 4-2 in extra time. However, the British have so far failed to win the European Championship. They remain the only team that has become a world champion and has never won their continental championship. The team's best achievement was Euro 2020, when, having reached the final, it lost to Italy in a penalty shoot-out with a score of 3:2.

At the qualification stage for the 2024 European Championship, the English national team got into Group C together with Italy, Malta, North Macedonia, and Ukraine. The teams played two matches each, away and at home. The British won six matches. Having drawn twice and not lost a single game, they scored the most points in their group – 20. Italy is in second place with 14 points. Ukraine scored the same number of points, but for indirect reasons, Italy came out ahead. England and Italy advanced from Group C to the group stage of Euro 2024. The top scorers of the group were the British – Harry Kane with 8 goals and Bukayo Saka with 4 goals.

In the group stage of Euro 2024, the England national team got into group C with Slovenia, Denmark, and Serbia. According to the group stage results, the teams that took the first two places will advance to the play-offs. As of March 2024, England is ranked third in the FIFA rankings.
